And raising "full sail" (toggle off the gun interface) improves your speed, but you have to switch back to battle sail to use your guns. Lowering your forward sails gives you a weather helm (turns easier into the wind) and lowering your rear sails gives you a lee helm (turns faster away from the wind).Īlso completely lowering your sails speeds up your gun reload time.

If you're having trouble maneuvering into close range a broadside of chain shot will damage their rigging and slow them down. For capturing a ship you want to use grape shot, but it won't do anything unless they've sustained some regular damage so put a broadside of ball shot (at least) into them from long range before changing to grape and closing.
